MAY 2018
Our April speaker was Angie Hughes, who found the energy to tell us about her work after dealing with 16 of us at a workshop earlier in the day.
WEBSITE
I hope you like the look of the website and that it will encourage you to visit it regularly. Please let us know if you have any suggestions to help us make it as good as possible for you.
We are planning to regularly take photographs at Show ’n Tell and put them in our website Gallery. However, if you do not want us to photograph your work please do not hesitate to tell us.
DATA PROTECTION ACT 2018
By now you will all be aware of this act which will be in place from 25 May. Your committee has been working hard to interpret it correctly for our members and as a result you will be receiving an email from Pat (our Secretary) which we must have your response to before the implementation date (i.e. but 24 May).
We now have a DPA file which will be kept up to date with all the communication we have and will have in regard to this matter. It will be kept in the care of the chair or secretary at all times.
MALVERN
Jan Hassard will be at this month’s meeting and will take any quilts entered to Malvern so please bring your quilt together with a stamp addressed envelope so that she can send you your receipt to enable you can collect your quilt at the end of the show.
SEWING DAY at BERWICK LODGE – Sunday 10 June 2-6pm with refreshments
Please sign-up as soon as possible so that we can confirm numbers to the venue. NB. There is a £2 deposit (which will be given to charity but we are asking for that as a commitment as wewant to ensure people who sign up are definitely going to attend).
AMERICAN MUSEUM, Bath – Quilting Bee
We have been invited to go to the museum to sit and sew in their textile room from 10:00am – 4:00pm on two Tuesdays this year. The invitation is for 2-6 people and on the day you will get free entry to the museum, free parking and 20% off food and purchases in the shops. The dates we have been invited to go are 19 June and 9 October so please let me know, by email, if you would like to attend. Please note that there is only room to do hand sewing work and places will be given on a first come, first served basis.
Also, the 1718 coverlet (the prize possession in the Quilters’ Guild collection} is currently at the museum and will be on display until 29 July. It’s a rare opportunity to view it as I understand it will be going into storage later this year.
2018 CHALLENGE
There is one piece of fabric left if there’s anyone out there who wants to join the challenge. Also, for the avoidance of doubt, you can use any technique you like on your work, the only thing you must do is have a recognisable piece of the material on the front. And a reminder that they need to be handed in at the September meeting please. Participants can also swap colours with other entrants or, should you want to purchase any more material it is by Rose & Hubble (cotton spot) and more can be purchased from the Fabric Guild in Leicester, and probably from other suppliers.
FABRICS PLUS
I rang the shop a couple of days ago and they confirmed that they are going to be under new ownership from 29 May. There are plans to have a special opening event soon after and I’ll let you know when I hear more.
DAWN PAVITT
Dawn was a founder member of BQ and Judith Barker has been in touch and asked me to let everyone know the news of her recent death and Judith has shared the following information about Dawn: Dawn ran classes in the Friends Meeting House, and from those, people decided to start the group. Dawn and I taught workshops together sometimes, and she gave talks all over the place. She worked, at that time, in the Drama Department of the university as head of wardrobe, and her previous career had been in theatre costume at the RSC and freelance. Her knowledge about costume and textiles was amazing, and her passion for art inspired lots of people. Through her, BQ held exhibitions at the Vandyke Gallery (part of the drama department) and at the Royal West of England Academy, and made some fantastic fund-raising quilts.
The date for Dawn’s funeral has not yet been confirmed. If you are interested in attending please contact Judith for details – jabarker14@gmail.com.
QUILT COMMISSION
We have been contacted by a lady who needs someone to make a quilt for her. By the sound of it she doesn’t need anything fancy. Here is her request:
I have been collecting through the years my children’s old clothes hoping that one day I will be skilled enough to make a patchwork blanket to give to them as a gift. Well, it is not going to happen as I have just increased my hours at work and never managed to master the art of patchwork so I am wondering if you know of anybody who I would be able to commission the work to. There are lots of old clothes and I would love it to become a lovely patchwork blanket for my daughter’s 13th birthday.
If you want to volunteer or find out more please contact Sonia on 07834 315 128.
